A taxi driver who helped Bobi Wine evade house arrest in January this year has cried out for help.
Twaha Ssebunya is pleading with the opposition National Unity Platform (NUP) party to help him get another job after he was fired by his boss.
Ssebunya was plunged into the limelight after Bobi Wine jumped into his commuter taxi while fleeing from house arrest.
In a viral clip, Bobi Wine can be seen greeting the driver and asking him not to stop anywhere near police officers.
A star-struck Ssebunya is visibly elated to be driving the opposition leader.
BAD TURN OF EVENTS – FIRED FROM JOB
In the days that followed, the diver became a national sensation giving out media interviews as he recounted the once-in-a-lifetime experience.
Shortly afterwards, however, his world was turned upside down, when his boss learnt of the incident.
He says, the commuter taxi was immediately taken from him.
“I am not sure if my boss is an NRM supporter but he told me that he had seen me driving Bobi Wine around and that he wanted me to park his vehicle.”
Ssebunya says, earlier on he had received multiple threatening phone calls including one from a woman who summoned him to Kampala Central Police Station.
He says he deeply regrets the incident as it has changed his life for the worse.
“I am suffering greatly because I have no other means of survival, I live hand to mouth,” Ssebunya told BBS TV.”
“What happened was beyond my control. I did not plan to have the (NUP) president jump into my taxi.”
Ssebunya appealed to the NUP leadership to give him financial support
“If they can help me start up something small from where I can earn a living, that is all I ask from them,” he said.
The NUP leadership was yet to comment on Ssebunya’s ordeal.
