The NRM Secretary General , Justine Kasule Lumumba has said the ruling NRM party has been fair enough to allow Kamuli District Woman MP serve as Speaker of Parliament and deputy Speaker for a combined 20 years.

On Sunday, Kadaga who has been the incumbent was dropped as the NRM flag bearer for the Speakership race in favour of her former deputy, Jacob Oulanyah.

This has since attracted statements from Kadaga claiming that the Central Executive Committee (CEC) was not fair to her.

Speaking in response to questions from journalists about the same, Lumumba said Kadaga is being untruthful by claiming that the party’s top organ has not been fair.

“The party gave you two terms as speaker and two terms as Speaker. In all the four times, you went in unopposed (in the party). If the party has taken a decision to endorse somebody else, in all fairness, don’t antagonize the party,” Lumumba said on Sunday evening at State House Entebbe.

The ruling NRM party Secretary General insisted that it is foolhardy and double standards for someone who has gone through unopposed for 20 years to claim unfairness because someone else has been endorsed in a similar fashion.

“Go and sit with the leadership of the party together with the president so you can be given other responsibilities. Let someone else be given the responsibility to lead parliament and with your experience, you would be the best adviser so that we make parliament better in serving Ugandans.”

“If you say it must be you, then that is not the NRM spirit.”

For many months, there has been a stalemate within the ruling NRM party on who to become the Speaker.

Oulanyah’s camp openly said he is the rightful candidate for party in the speakership race after an alleged 2016 agreement that he lets Kadaga complete her 10 year tenure as speaker of parliament and he takes over from there.

However, on the other side, Kadaga has vehemently dismissed the same, saying there has never been such an agreement.

Sunday’s events were the climax of the stalemate.
