Hearing of the bail application of Kawempe South MP elect Muhammad Segirinya flopped on Thursday, as two of his lawyers failed to agree on how to proceed, which prompted Buganda Road Court Grade One Magistrate Gladys Kamasanyu to remand him further.

Counsel Kiryowa Abdul and Shamim Malende informed court that they had instructions to represent Segirinya.

They however, contradicted themselves on a number of issues.

Kiryowa informed court that they were ready for only the bail application, not hearing of the matter. But Malende in her submission told court that they were ready hear the evidence from the witnesses and to cross examine them in the next sitting.

Malende also told court that on several occasions, they had tried to access the prosecution to serve them but failed.

This was however, disputed by Keko Joan the State Prosecutor who said that she is ever in office up to 7pm and that nobody had ever approached them.

The magistrate in her ruling, blamed the lawyers for lack of coordination.

“The Defence didn’t take any reasonable practical step by getting any disclosure. The lawyers have not shown readiness to proceed, one says this, the other pulls it down.”

The magistrate adjourned the matter to 15th April 2021 for hearing and bail application.

Speaking after the session, Mathias Walukaga the Mayor elect of Kyengera Town council blamed the defence lawyers for not doing their work which led to further remanding of their colleague.

He called upon Lawyer Medard Ssegona and Erias Lukwago to intervene in the matter.

On 23rd March 2021, Segirinya was remanded to Kitalya prison on charges of inciting violence.

Prosecution contends that Ssegirinya and others arrived at Mini price in Kampala, holding placards bearing messages demanding the release of the detained party supporters.
