A police officer at the rank of Assistant Inspector of Police has been arrested for allegedly shooting one person dead and injuring another.
The incident happened on Thursday at Waiga village in Buliisa Sub County, Buliisa District, when the police officer shot at a group of people that had attacked the Bugoigo Police Post to demand for their motorcycle they had grabbed from a business to sell and recover their money after he refused to pay them upon completing the work they were hired to do at his farm.
The motorcycle had been transferred from Bugoigo Police Post to Buliisa Central Police station.
“Over 40 people stormed the Police post and started pelting stones at the OC and other police officials who were on duty. In an attempt to repulse them, the OC shot in the air. Preliminary information indicates that a stray bullet hit a child who died instantly and injured another woman who is at Buliisa hospital in a critical condition,” Officer in Charge of Buliisa Central Police Station Ms Evelyn Ayo, said.
After learning that two people had been shot, more locals ganged up to overran the Police post, but were repulsed by police personnel from Buliisa Central station, who came in as the back up to their colleagues at Bugoigo Police Post.
The police officer accused of shooting the people is being detained at Buliisa Central Police station as investigations into the matter continue.
