The National Unity Platform (NUP) has suspended its registrar for Jinja District over allegations that he was demanding bribes in order to nominate candidates.

NUP Electoral Commission coordinator Alex Waiswa say that Saul Nsongambi has been asked to step aside as they investigate allegations that he was soliciting bribes of between Shs500,000 and Shs1m from people to declare them party flag bearers.

Waiswa said such allegations undermine the core values of democracy which NUP stands for.

Nsongambi was arrested and detained at Jinja central police station on Tuesday over allegations of extortion from aspiring NUP flag bearers.

He was later released on police bond.

Waiswa adds that the party has resolved to suspend aspirants screening exercise until all complaints related to corruption in the whole process are expedited.

Over 200 members of the National Unity Platform have so far petitioned their institution’s vetting committee, due to their dissatisfaction with being ruled out of contention.

The petitioners had hoped to be flag bearers for the nascent party.

According to one of the aggrieved candidates who spoke on grounds of anonymity, some aspirants, who are close friends with NUP leadership are being favored over others.

“I don’t want to be quoted but I have been pushed away. I have been denied a card for someone who joined People Power in July,” the aspirant said.
