The leader of National Unity Platform (NUP) Robert Kyagulanyi alias Bobi Wine has claimed being put under house arrest.

Kyagulanyi, and other opposition leaders under their pressure group, “Forces of Change” had planned to hold protests against what they say is “inadequate” service delivery by the ruling government.

As part of the demonstrations which were to begin today, the opposition consortium had planned to plant banana stems in every pothole in Kampala to show dissatisfaction with the state of roads in the country.

However, Kyagulanyi, on Thursday took to his X platform to claim that security had surrounded his home and sabotaged his protest plans.

“The cowardly military & police have surrounded our home and put us under house arrest, but the protest is on. Fix our roads! Free Political Prisoners! Free Uganda!” he posted.

Earlier on, Forum for Democratic Change (FDC)’s Dr Kiiza Besigye also claimed he had been barricaded at his home by security operatives.

It should be noted that this week, Police warned they would not allow disruptions to traffic flow in Kampala, amid the ongoing Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) and upcoming G77+ China summits, further deeming the planned protests unlawful.

The police and sister security agencies said they would not allow any activities with a potential of violence to take place, including the unlawful assemblies.

“Therefore, any violent acts committed in any part of the country, under the guise of peaceful protests, shall be swiftly disrupted, investigated, perpetrators arrested and charged to court,” authorities said.
