Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) has rubbished allegations in both mainstream and social media that it fired some of its employees for allegedly clearing an armored vehicle for National Unity Platform (NUP) President Robert Kyagulanyi Sentamu.
Earlier this week, Bobi Wine posted a black armored vehicle which he said was donated to him by generous supporters.
Government has since launched investigations into how the vehicle was cleared and the Inspector General of Government ordered Bobi Wine to declare it to his office by March 31, or risk losing it to government.
Media reports alleged that all Motor Vehicle sections at URA that handle car registration and particularly the officers who worked on Bobi Wine’s vehicle were summoned to record statements on how the car was registered and no one made an alert.
“The ware housing section, Licensing section and the Clearing Firm which handled the car were put in great fear as they weren’t sure what awaited them,” some of the reports alleged.
Other reports said a resolution was later on February 25, passed to recall the car for tax re-evaluation and “The Commissioner who worked upon its release a one Jane Akello was sent on forced leave with immediate effect.”
However, while responding to what he called baseless claims, Ian Rumanyika, the Assistant Commissioner Public and Cooperate Affairs at URA told Chimpreports that they (URA) had neither fired nor forced any of their employee on forced leave.
Without divulging more details, Rumanyika said that URA does not “have any Commissioner in the names f Jane Akello as claimed.”
