Ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) party has vowed to pursue justice for one of the party supporters who was on Wednesday attacked by unknown men and nailed
Baker Kasumba told police yesterday that he was trailed by two men who hit him on the head and proceeded to hammer two six inch nails through his hands.
He believes he was being punished for supporting the NRM Party and President Yoweri Museveni.
Gruesome photos of the victim on social media attracted widespread condemnation of the incident, with many calling for more political tolerance.
NRM’s Secretary General, Mrs Justine Kasule Lumumba this morning visited Kasumba at Mulago Hospital.
Lumumba, according to statement by the ruling party, “sympathized with him, and assured him the party will, in addition to footing his medical bills, ensure that his assailers are brought to book.”
Earlier yesterday, the NRM said it “condemned in the strongest terms possible the heinous assault”
“It’s now clear that Baker was targeted for his political beliefs and Police must act fast to apprehend the criminals behind this act, to send a strong and clear message that assaults on Political expression have no place in our free and democratic society. We call upon all political actors to remind their supporters of this fact, especially as we head into the political season,” the party said.
Yesterday, Robert Kyagulanyi the head of the People Power Movement, cautioned his supporters against engaging in such vengeful acts, which he said would help prove the point of critics, who have for long painted People Power as a violent group.
