Comedian Sammie of the ‘Samie and Shawa’ comedy duo has opened up about his painful experience of his mother disowning him because of his career path.
Sammie, in an interview with Galaxy Media, revealed that he was born in a family of believers of Noah’s church. The sect has a belief that when a child does anything outside the norms of the church, they excommunicate them.
He met his fate after his performance at one of the episodes of the Comedy Store. When his mother was made aware of it, she openly told him that she would no longer accept him as her son.
Since his career was starting, Samie thought his mother would finally grow into it and understand the nature of his job. He thought she would change her mind after he started earning some money, but unfortunately, it was not the case.
The visibly broken Samie recounted traveling to the village to check on his mother, but he failed. He decided to send her Ugx 50K on her phone, but what broke him was that she topped it up with Ugx 5K and sent it back, claiming the money was linked to sin and she would not accept it.

“I have not enjoyed this industry because my mother left me. Sometimes I want my family to enjoy my hard work but my mother disowned me because of comedy.
Even when I try to call her, she just hangs up saying I’m a bad child. She doesn’t want to talk to me because she thinks my job is evil. I tried lying to her that I work on TV and she said if it wasn’t for their faith, it was straight up from the devil,” he revealed.
Sammie says he tried everything in his power to reconnect with his mother, but she had already made up her mind. Even to this day, they remain out of contact.
“I loved my mother and tried to reconnect in vain. I feel so sad when I hear Shawa speaking to his mother in my presence. It makes me miss my mom; I cannot celebrate mothers’ day and I spend it at home feeling so much pain because of her,” he said.
Shawa, on the other side, narrated that his parents discouraged him because they thought he was not earning enough. They advised him to travel to the UAE to work, but he disappointed them by choosing his comedy career instead. At this point, he says they are starting to reap the benefits of his sweat because he can now afford to send them some money as upkeep.
