President Yoweri Museveni and opposition leader Robert Kyagulanyi, popularly known as Bobi Wine, are preparing to officially launch their 2026 presidential campaigns in different parts of the country, signaling the start of a heated race.
Museveni is expected to kick off his campaigns in Munyonyo, Kampala, where he will meet party leaders and supporters under the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM). The veteran leader, who has been in power since 1986, is seeking another term, anchoring his campaign on stability, security, and economic growth.
On the other hand, Bobi Wine, who heads the National Unity Platform (NUP), will open his campaign trail in Jinja. Known for his strong support among the youth and urban dwellers, Bobi Wine has promised to champion change, fight corruption, and restore democratic governance in Uganda.
Political analysts believe that the choice of Munyonyo and Jinja reflects the two candidates’ different campaign strategies. Museveni aims to consolidate support in the capital and surrounding areas, while Bobi Wine is focusing on eastern Uganda, where he has steadily gained influence.
As the campaigns roll out, Ugandans anticipate a highly charged political season. Observers expect security, the economy, unemployment, and governance to dominate the campaign agenda.
With both camps mobilizing ground support and preparing massive rallies, the 2026 general elections are shaping up to be one of the most contested in Uganda’s history.
