A section of Members of Parliament have said Ugandans should blame their laxity for the looming second COVID-19 lockdown.
The West Budama County South MP, Jacob Marksons Oboth said the attitude of Ugandans, mainly in the urban centers, is aiding the drastic spread of the contagious disease.
“The laissez faire attitude in the Kampala community is worrying and will be responsible for any possible lockdown,” said Oboth-Oboth.
“The people in the village are cautious and mindful of the Ministry of Health guidelines to the point that they make sure any visitor washes hand and put on mask.”
He noted that reinstatement of the lockdown would be inevitable since it is the responsibility of the State to protect the lives of its citizens.
Meanwhile the Kawempe North representative Latif Sebbagala said that government should do more in sensitizing the public on the COVID-19 safe guidelines but not subject population to another lockdown since the virus will stay with us long.
“This virus (COVID-19) is not about to go and therefore more efforts should be put to sensitize our people to protect themselves better,” he said.
The Maracha East MP James Acidiri on his part said the government should ensure that all Ugandans are provided with protective gears to protect themselves instead of contemplating lockdown.
“Ensure that all citizens are given the necessary protective gears to shield them from COVID-19 infections,” he said.
On Friday the Ministry of Health declared 98 new confirmed cases and most are from Kampala.
“Results from COVID-19 tests done on 20 August 2020 confirm 98 new cases. This brings the cumulative confirmed cases of Ugandans to 1,848,” said Ministry of Health statement.
The increasing number of infections is being blamed on public transport and failure by the city business places to adhere to standard operating procedures.
The Minister of Kampala Affairs, Betty Amongi Akena has already given strong warning that total lockdown might be reinstated to curb the spread of COVID-19.
Minister of Works, Gen. Katumba Wamala has also warned that public transport operations might be suspended again as the cases increase in the city.
