The Uganda Ministry of Transport has today suspended the controversial Automated Express Penalty System (EPS Auto).
Since the initiation of the Automated Express Penalty System (EPS Auto), Ugandans have expressed their displeasure with the system.
The automated number plate recognition cameras are designed to detect traffic violations such as speeding and red light offences.
Flagged vehicles are issued automated tickets, which are sent to the vehicle owner via email or SMS, and they have 72 hours to face a 50% surcharge.
The lowered speed limits, as low as 30 km/h, have been met with harsh criticism from road users, who deemed the system to be doing more harm than good.
After days of dissatisfaction, the Uganda Ministry of Transport has halted the system, effective midnight on 11 June 2025.
