Uganda’s ICT Minister Dr. Chris Baryomunsi has urged Ugandans to explore alternative means of communication instead of relying solely on Facebook.
Speaking during a public engagement, Baryomunsi emphasized that the country must not become overly dependent on one platform for information sharing and social interaction.
He encouraged Ugandans to innovate and embrace other digital channels, including local platforms, to diversify communication.
“While Facebook remains a popular tool, we must not put all our eggs in one basket. Ugandans should think beyond Facebook and develop or adopt other platforms to share information and conduct business,” Baryomunsi said.
His remarks come amid ongoing debate about the role of foreign-owned social media platforms in Uganda’s information space.
The minister highlighted the importance of supporting local innovators to create homegrown solutions that can rival global platforms.
The call has sparked mixed reactions, with some Ugandans welcoming the idea of local innovation, while others argue that Facebook remains indispensable for communication, business, and networking.
