Veteran music producer Magic Washington has called out Ugandan artists for bragging about material possessions, forgetting to advance their careers.
While addressing the state of the local music industry with NRG Radio, Washington revealed that artists are wasting time trying to prove themselves to their fans on social media and outcompeting their opponents. While at it, they often lose sight of how to improve their lives and careers, focusing instead on public approval.
Washington gave an example of artists who bought cars and constructed houses and immediately bragged about it, as if it were the most significant achievement by an artist in the industry.
An artist buys a car or constructs houses made of just stones and cement, but they go on to become a problem. People are owning petrol stations, perfume lines, clothing lines, shoes, headsets, among other things, and you are just owning a car. Are you okay?
During his time, Magic Washington revealed that he worked so hard to make the industry a better place. He networked with international stars like P-Square, Wizkid, among others, who he says opened doors for more opportunities in his career. When he worked with Radio & Weasel, they were nominated for the BET Awards.
Washington furthermore pointed out that local artists have continuously limited their potential by performing in local bars, flying economy, and not investing in their looks. This, he says, brings down the value of their brand and reduces their bargaining power.
He advised them to always take advantage of the opportunities presented to them when they fly out to different countries. Washington listed examples of Burna Boy and Wizkid, who he says have earned international recognition through networking with people in more organized societies abroad.

Furthermore, he advised artists who wish to have their craft sell beyond borders to invest heavily in music production and also look out for more experienced and learned music managers.
When you get a chance to travel to these countries, tell the promoters that you are staying for another two weeks. Move around, get good ideas, work with different producers, and try to get contacts.
Have your music produced in a professional way, give the producer the money he wants because they keep pushing your music if you give them their royalties.
The reason why artists do not last for long is because they are greedy and selfish. Have a team that is checked and organized. Have managers who are educated, not your friends with whom you hustled on the streets.
The day you stop being illiterate, disorganized, greedy and selfish not only towards people around you but also yourselves, you won’t make losses. Look nice, buy good clothes and look fresh and everything will thrive,” he said.
