Kabale district authorities have resolved to petition the National Security Council to intervene in a matter in which Rwandan Nationals are said to have encroached on and planted trees on Ugandan land in Maziba Sub County, Kabale district.

According to locals, early this year, Rwandan Nationals from Gisuru village in Nyagatare district crossed to Uganda and grabbed two hectares of land located at Kyaninanuunu hill, about five kilometers into Uganda; cleared it and planted trees.

Leopold Twesigye, one of the concerned locals, says that with protection of Rwanda security operatives, Rwandan nationals kept on returning back and weeding their trees.

He says that locals took it for granted until the Rwandan nationals warned of more expansion by ordering locals who were growing crops next to the trees not to move away after harvesting.

This attracted the attention of the district security operatives led by the RDC Godfrey Nyakahuma, who came in and issued orders for the Rwandans to uproot their trees.

Yet to this date, about two weeks after the order was issued, the trees remain in place.

Nyakahuma says the district security committee has resolved to petition the National Security Council to intervene and resolve the matter before it escalates into conflicts.

Nyakahuma is now calling upon the residents to remain calm until the government responds.

Recently, the minister of ICT and National guidance Dr Chris Baryomunsi said that the government through its surveying experts will conduct thorough investigations into the dispute and also liaise with Rwanda government so that the matter is solved.
