Seven Primary Seven pupils from Rise and Shine Primary School in Kaliro have missed their Primary Leaving Examinations (PLE) after the school director allegedly embezzled the registration fees meant for their exams.
Mr Patrick Muyigo, 68, was arrested by Kaliro Police, led by District Police Commander Nathan Male, following accusations of misappropriating UGX 560,000 allocated for the registration of these students.
District Education Officer (DEO) Edward Kamaga revealed that his office was alerted to the situation when it became clear that the students were absent from the exams.
A quick investigation linked the missing funds to the school director, prompting his arrest.
He is currently held at Kaliro Police Station as authorities conduct further inquiries.
“This has severely impacted the affected students and their families, who were counting on these exams for their academic future,” Kamaga stated.
“We are dedicated to pursuing justice for these pupils and will continue working with law enforcement to address this matter.”
Police are gathering additional evidence to ensure a thorough investigation. They also urge community members to report any information that could assist in the case.
The incident underscores ongoing issues in Uganda’s education system, particularly around financial accountability and the protection of students’ rights.
Local leaders and parents are now advocating for stricter oversight and accountability in school management to prevent such situations in the future.
