The newly appointed Electoral Commission chairperson, Justice Simon Byabakama has assured the public of a free and fair election in 2026.

“To people of Uganda, I wish to assure you of an unwavering commitment and resolve to execute our constitutional mandate in a transparent and impartial manner for promotion of democracy in our country through conducting  of free and fair elections. We undertake to do this,” Byabakama said.

At the function presided over by the Chief Justice Alphonse Owiny Dollo at the Judiciary headquarters in Kampala, other members of the election body including  Hajjati Aisha Lubega (deputy chairperson) Stephen Tashobya ,Caroline Beinamayo, James Peter Emorut, Dr.Salie Simba Kayunga and Anthony Okello were all sworn in.

“I tell you that  given our background as men and women of tested character and professional background, we will serve country in accordance with the law to ensure elections are  organized to  preserve the  sanctity, unity, peace and stability this country is known for. My team will ensure we conduct elections we are all proud of as a country,” Byabakama.

“If you have any reservation in any area, come we discuss and if matters are within our domain, we will address them.”

The Justice Minister, Nobert Mao told the new team that all eyes will be on them as they begin work and preparing the country for the forthcoming polls.

“We expect you to be non-partisan as your decisions shouldn’t be for the benefit of any party. You have been carefully vetted and you are the best choice in the opinion of the president and now is the time to serve Uganda. Ugandans expect you to organise and manage a free and fair electoral process. Don’t let them down,”Mao said.

The Chief Justice, Alphonse Owiny Dollo echoed similar sentiments toward the Electoral Commission.

“The oath you have just taken was not to the chief justice. The Chief Justice is merely a witness but the oath you took is a solemn undertaking before God that you have accepted the responsibility placed in your hands and the burden you carry on your shoulders individually and collectively. It is not a small task,” Dollo said.

“ You occupy a pivotal place in this country and you are of fundamental importance . It falls on all of you to ensure that we bequeath to our children and grandchildren, a country we are proud of .”
