The government is to conduct an extensive aerial survey of minerals in the Lake Kyoga basin.

The 18-month aerial survey is part of a five-year project funded by the Government, the World Bank, the African Development Bank, and the Nordic Development Fund.

The aerial surveys will be conducted in Kwania, Apac, Dokolo, Amolatar, Kaberamaido, and Nakasongola Districts.

Joshua Lukaye, the Acting Assistant Commissioner from the Directorate of Petroleum in the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development says that they are currently doing surveys on Moroto Kadam basin but said plans are underway to do a survey on the Lake Kyoga basin.

Lukaye while addressing Kwania district leaders at Kwania District Headquarters on Wednesday appealed for support from the local leaders and the community members during the exercise.

Abongomola Sub-county female councilor Dorcus Agweng believes once minerals are discovered in Kwania, it will boost local revenue and improve service delivery in the district.

Kwania LCV Chairperson Geoffrey Alex Ogwal Adyebo welcomed the development. Adyebo asked the locals to render necessary support to the team.

In 1994, the government conducted mineral surveys in the Albertine region, Karamoja, and Lake Kyoga basin and found minerals around lake regions in the districts of Dokolo, Amolatar, Kwania, Apac, Buyende, and Nakasongola among others.
