Five staff of Entebbe International Airport have been remanded to prison on allegations of illegally dealing in minerals with intent to defraud.
According to the State House Anti-Corruption Unit, the 5 togetner with one businessman were charged at the Entebbe Chief Magistrate’s Court with dealing in minerals without a license, mingling minerals with intent to defraud and smuggling minerals on Friday 11th October 2024.
On 30th September 2024, a State House Anti-Corruption team was dispatched to the Airport, for an operation over the matter and 6 suspects were arrested.
The suspects have been identified as; Kananura Daniel, a Businessman, Mpomba Richard, Muhwezi Benon, Nkahirwa Pascal and Bekalaze Ismail all, Clearing Agents at Entebbe International Airport and Mujuzi John Keneddy, a cleaner at the Airport.
“These were found with 11 plastic boxes containing 300 metal bars they claimed were gold and intended to use the same to defraud unsuspecting persons, especially investors and businessmen,” says a State House Anti-Corruption Unit statement.
Upon a forensic analysis by the minerals experts from the Directorate of Geological Survey and Mines, the items were found to be other minerals other than gold.
They have all been charged at the Entebbe Chief Magistrate’s Court and remanded till 25/10/2024.
