    Drunk Police Driver Knocks Two People Dead

    Kampala Metropolitan Police  is investigating a fatal accident that happened at Nsambya Junction on Thursday leaving two people dead and three severely injured.

    The Police vehicle, a UP5638 Hino truck, rammed into three motor vehicles and knocked three motorcycles, according to KMP Deputy Spokesperson Luke Owoyesigire.

    “It is alleged that police vehicle UP5638 hino truck, while at Nsambya sharing junction, ran into UAX851J Benz, UBD944J Hijet, UAS427X Vitz and also knocked three other motorcycles,” Owoyesigire said.

    Two people died on spot while three were rushed to hospital with serious injuries and the driver arrested.

    “We have so far confirmed that our officer, Corporal Achacha, was driving under the influence of alcohol,” Owoyesigire said.

    The deceased have been identified as Bakulu Mpaji and Abdul Hakim Badru and the bodies conveyed to Mulago Mortuary for postmortem.

    Further investigations are underway to ascertain the cause of the accident, according to Police.

    According to Traffic Police records, at least 3,880 people died in road accidents in 2019 while 9,635 survived with serious injuries and another 1,175 got minor injuries.

    The leading causes of traffic deaths and injuries include overspeeding, drunken driving, distractions to drivers, and non-adherence to traffic lanes, as per the traffic report.
