Climate change is a subject that’s remained a hot topic for discussion among various groups of people ranging from governments and civil societies not forgetting the citizenry.
The long-term shifts in temperatures and weather patterns have led to loss of lives and livelihoods as seen in various places in Uganda like Kasese and Bududa.
Organizations like Treescape Planet through tree planting together with NEMA, United Nations and other actors are working around the clock to empower communities to plant trees.
“Communities consciously engaged for a sustainable planet,” reads the organization’s Vision.
Through partnering with farmers and local communities, the non-profit is also tackling the challenge of gender inequality.
This has been done by working with over 60% women farmers providing them with fruit trees to plant there by saving the environment and providing some form of food security.
With a target of planting 1,000,000 trees country wide in the next 3 years, the organization has partnered with various schools to plant trees and also teach the youngsters the importance of trees to the environment in order to enable them transfer this knowledge to their parents and communities.
“We believe restoring the environment begins with us and partnerships with climate justice clubs in school will help further the cause,” Ms. Tukwatanise Bonnita, Programs coordinator, Treescape Planet Organization.
While at Namugongo Vocational Secondary school on April 15th 2023, Ms. Bonnita also pointed out that they taught the students the importance and usage of the three Rs of Reduce, Reuse and Recycle in protecting and restoring the environment for everyone’s benefit.
Lastly, through creating and partnering with clubs in a host of primary, secondary schools and tertiary institutions, the organization is enabling community-based knowledge and awareness spread about the purposes and importance of planting trees.
