Residents of Entebbe and travelers using Entebbe International Airport have reason to celebrate following the launch of a new road project that will provide an alternative route to the airport.
The initiative was officially commissioned by Entebbe Municipality Mayor, Fabrice Brad Rulinda, who presided over the groundbreaking ceremony at Tanda playgrounds on August 20, 2025.
The road, which will stretch 6.1 kilometers from Ssebugwawo–Bunono–Abaita Ababiri with a Kitinda link, is designed to ease access to the airport, especially during the rainy seasons when the main highway at Kitubulu often floods.
Project Details
Mayor Rulinda explained that the road will feature two lanes, each 3.5 meters wide, with parking lanes of 2–2.5 meters on both sides and pedestrian walkways ranging between 1.5–2 meters. Construction is expected to take 18 months.
He called on the main contractors, China Jiangxi International Economic and Technical Cooperation Co. Ltd, to prioritize employing local residents so that the community directly benefits from the project. He further urged the company to stick to the project timeline and ensure smooth delivery.
“This project must be remembered by the community. It makes no sense to spend such huge amounts of money without the people around benefiting,” Mayor Rulinda emphasized. He also reminded the contractors to minimize dust, avoid blocking residents’ access to their homes, and ensure that the community is not inconvenienced during construction.
Community Benefits and Oversight
Rulinda encouraged local leaders to report any unnecessary delays, stressing that the project should be completed within the agreed 18 months. He also pledged to lobby for funds to revamp Tanda playgrounds, saying a better football pitch would promote sports and nurture local talent.
The undersecretary for Kampala City and Metropolitan Affairs, Ms. Monica Edemachu, echoed concerns about safety at the site. She urged the project managers to ensure that construction equipment is properly inspected to prevent accidents and called for clear diversion signage during the works.
She also emphasized the importance of environmental safeguards, warning that projects have previously been halted due to environmental violations.
Institutional Support
Entebbe’s Deputy Town Clerk, Sophie Nakandi, described the road project as a key part of improving infrastructure and connectivity within the Greater Kampala Metropolitan Area. She commended landlords who willingly provided the right of way without demanding compensation, and called on the contractors to deliver quality work.
Project manager and municipal engineer, Eng. Christine Mary Nanfuka Sengendo, confirmed that China Jiangxi will handle the civil works, while Professional Engineering Consultants Ltd will oversee supervision, and GESCH Consultant Ltd will be responsible for environmental and social safeguards.
Eng. Nanfuka added that the new road will be fitted with solar streetlights, ensuring it remains safe and accessible even at night.
