Standup comedian Dr. Hillary Okello has expressed disappointment with fellow comedians begging money from the audience.

Hillary Okello vented his frustration during a TV interview, where he explained that several comedians had made it a point to walk through the audience asking for handouts. He claimed they kept picking out people they thought were influential, rounded them up, and didn’t leave them until they received a token from them.

Sharing fellow comedian Patrick Salvado’s story, Okello revealed that when he traveled to Nigeria for a performance, he executed his skits professionally and didn’t ask for money, leaving the audience in awe.

Giving his reasons as to why he hates it, Okello explained that he found it disrespectful to the audience. He, however, gave exceptions to the comedians who were being given money by the people from the crowd.

“I’m here to entertain you, and when I’m done, there is someone to pay me, or if it is my show, you have already paid for tickets to enter. Secondly, put yourself in that person’s shoes. If I go to a show and sit there, and the performer starts asking for money from me. It doesn’t make sense for you to go and ask for money. I understand if someone offers you money because I have done shows and people raise a 50 K in the air while you are performing.

Hillary explained that some comedians did this because they were not fully prepared for the stage. He claimed they wrote short jokes and came to the stage with hopes that they would spend the rest of the time moving around begging for money.

“I find it very disrespectful because people have paid to watch you. Come on stage, do your jokes, make people happy, and if someone decides to give you money, well and good,” he said.
