In a move that has sent ripples through the political landscape of Wakiso District, Mathias Walukaga has officially thrown his weight behind Emmanuel Magoola for the Busiro East Member of Parliament seat in the upcoming 2026 General Elections.

This strategic endorsement comes just weeks after the Electoral Commission (EC) and the High Court upheld the disqualification of Walukaga, the Kyengera Town Council Mayor and renowned musician, over academic credential discrepancies.

The Shift in Busiro East Dynamics

Walukaga, a heavyweight within the National Unity Platform (NUP), was widely seen as a frontrunner for the seat currently held by Medard Lubega Sseggona. However, following his legal setback regarding the validity of his mature-age entry certificates, Walukaga has pivoted from candidate to kingmaker.

Speaking to supporters, Walukaga emphasized that his decision to back Emmanuel Magoola is rooted in the need for continuity and strong representation for the people of Busiro East.

“The struggle for Busiro East does not end with one person. While I was unfairly blocked from the race, our vision for the constituency remains. I have looked at the field and I am confident that Emmanuel Magoola is the right leader to carry the mantle forward,” Walukaga stated.

    Who is Emmanuel Magoola?

Emmanuel Magoola (Matovu Emmanuel Magoola) is no stranger to the Busiro East political scene. Having contested in previous cycles, Magoola has built a reputation for grassroots mobilization. With Walukaga’s massive following—driven by his music career and mayoral record—now shifting toward Magoola, the race for Busiro East has become significantly more competitive.

    Why This Endorsement Matters

    1. Consolidating the NUP Vote: By endorsing Magoola, Walukaga aims to prevent a split in the opposition vote, ensuring that NUP supporters have a clear direction despite his absence from the ballot.

    2. Challenging the Incumbent: The endorsement poses a direct challenge to the incumbent, Medard Sseggona, who is running as an independent after a fallout with the NUP leadership.

    3. Voter Sentiment: Walukaga’s influence in Kyengera and surrounding areas is substantial. His “blessing” provides Magoola with instant credibility among the youth and the urban poor.

    Looking Ahead to 2026

The Electoral Commission’s strict stance on academic papers has already reshaped several races across Uganda. In Busiro East, the focus now shifts to whether Magoola can successfully convert Walukaga’s endorsement into a victory at the polls.

As the 2026 election draws closer, Busiro East remains one of the most watched constituencies in the country, serving as a litmus test for the National Unity Platform’s dominance in the central region.
