Police in Kisoro District are investigating a gruesome mob killing in which a man was lynched by angry residents after allegedly selling his family land without his wife’s consent.

The incident occurred in Busamba Village, Nyarusiza Sub-county, when locals reportedly attacked Patrick Niyonzima, 45, accusing him of secretly selling off the family’s only piece of land. According to eyewitnesses, tensions escalated after his wife discovered the sale and alerted community members.

Police say the mob ambushed Niyonzima on his way home and beat him to death before fleeing the scene. His body was later taken to Kisoro Hospital mortuary for a post-mortem examination.

Elly Maate, the Kigezi Regional Police Spokesperson, condemned the act of mob justice, warning the public against taking the law into their own hands. “Selling family land without spousal consent is wrong, but killing someone is a criminal act.

The perpetrators will be arrested and prosecuted,” he said.

Authorities have launched a manhunt for those involved and urged communities to seek legal channels to resolve domestic or property disputes instead of resorting to violence.
