Hon. Medard Ssegona, the Member of Parliament for Busiro East, has announced his resignation from the National Unity Platform (NUP) and declared that he will contest as an independent candidate in the upcoming elections.
Ssegona, a seasoned legislator and lawyer, revealed that his decision stemmed from deep disagreements with NUP’s internal processes.
He cited lack of transparency in candidate selection and what he described as “undemocratic tendencies” within the party.
Speaking to his supporters, Ssegona expressed gratitude for the trust and loyalty they have shown him over the years.
He vowed to continue championing their interests in Parliament, emphasizing that his independence will allow him to serve without party restrictions.
His exit from NUP has sparked debate among political observers, with some predicting it could weaken the party’s grip in Buganda, where it has traditionally enjoyed strong support.
However, NUP officials have downplayed the move, insisting that the party remains united and focused on the 2026 elections.
Ssegona’s decision now sets the stage for a closely watched race in Busiro East, as he seeks to retain his seat without the backing of a major political party.
