Catholics from Entebbe Vicariate have raised more than 91 million shillings to support the ongoing renovation of Lubaga Cathedral, a project being carried out in preparation for the cathedral’s centenary celebrations.
The contribution was officially handed over by the Entebbe Vicariate and comes as church leaders continue to call for wider support from the faithful.
Archbishop of Kampala, Paul Ssemogerere, welcomed the donation and encouraged believers to keep contributing, stressing that Lubaga Cathedral is not just a local church but a national symbol of the Catholic faith. He described the renovation as an important responsibility for all Ugandan Catholics.
So far, over Shs1.3 billion has been collected in both cash and pledges towards the Shs2.4 billion target, according to fundraising committee member John Kiyemba Freeman.
Eng. Pius Mugalaasi, who chairs the renovation committee, reported that visible improvements have already been made, including the construction of a new parking lot. He noted that only 67 days remain before the centenary celebrations begin.
To keep the fundraising spirit alive, church leaders have introduced a weekly initiative—designating every Wednesday as a special pilgrimage day. On these days, Christians from across the Kampala Archdiocese, Wakiso District, and beyond are invited to visit Lubaga Cathedral and make contributions towards the project.
