The Uganda Christian University (UCU) Mukono played host to the fifth round of the National Athletics Trials on Saturday 27th April attracting a formidable lineup of over 240 athletes competing in various track and field events. The event witnessed a mix of both seasoned athletes and emerging talents vying for top honors in disciplines including athletics, discus, long jump, triple jump, javelin, and shot put.
One of the standout performers of the day was Haron Adoli, who clinched victory in the 400m event. Adoli, aiming for a spot at the 2024 Paris Olympics, expressed his determination to make the most of such competitions to bolster his quest for qualification. The Ugandan prisons runner, who recently finished fifth at the All Africa Games in Accra, Ghana, emphasized the significance of these trials as crucial tests for athletes seeking international recognition.
Abdallah Muhammad, the publicity secretary of the Uganda Athletics Federation, underscored the pivotal role of the trials in nurturing talent within the country. Muhammad emphasized that the trials serve as a vital platform for talent development, enabling athletes to showcase their skills and potential on a national stage.
Another stand out performer was Nyawere Christine of UPDF who emerged victorious in the 100m women’s event, clocking an impressive time of 12.30 seconds. Koli Evalin Ocen and Auma Mary of Uganda Prisons secured second and third place respectively, with times of 12.5 and 12.7 seconds.
With the success of the fifth round behind them, attention now turns to the upcoming sixth edition of the national trials, scheduled for next month as part of the seven-round series.
