Six remarkable musicians have been nominated in the new Best Ugandan Act category at the upcoming MTV Africa Music Awards Kampala 2021.

Sheebah, Bebe Cool, John Blaq, Vinka, Daddy Andre and Spice Diana have all been named  as contenders for the first ever Best Ugandan Act category, to be added to the MAMA ceremony nominations in honour of host country talent.

The nominations for the first ten categories were announced earlier this month, and the Best Ugandan Act is the first new category to be revealed. This category, together with nine other categories, includes Best Male, Best Female, Best Group and Artist of the Year, were announced by MTV Base on Wednesday, 9 December, in partnership with Uganda, the Pearl of Africa, during a 45-minute special on MTV Base (DStv channel 322).

Reacting to her nomination, Spice Diana said, “Nominating me for the MTV MAMA is the highest award nomination I have ever received in my career. Being nominated means a lot and places me as an artist to watch on the African continent, I can’t get over it.”

Hip-hop and afro-beat artist John Blaq said, “I felt like my nomination itself is a statement to the youth from my district, Jinja, from my Country Uganda and East Africa to stand for their dreams and say together with me: WE CAN MAKE IT! The doors and dreams are now open for us to the world! Thank you MTV Base, and the MAMA and thank you for considering hosting them in my country, the Pearl of Africa, Uganda.”

Nominee Vinka enthused, “Thank you so much to the MAMA for this; I am truly humbled!”

The Honourable Godfrey Kiwanda, State Minister for Tourism Uganda said, “It is fantastic to see Ugandan music and our culture being celebrated. To see that Ugandan artists are being able to share their talent, not only on the continent, but on a truly international platform such as the MAMA, is incredible. Our partnership with MTV Base is testament to our commitment to investing in and elevating Ugandan youth, the music and arts to not only the continent but to the global stage.”
