    UPDF Captain in Hiding after Shooting Businessman In Bar Brawl

    Police are investigating a bar shootout in which a UPDF Soldier identified as Capt. Robert Namara Cool injured a city businessman – Benson Moses Mugisha.

    The incident occurred at around 11:45pm this past Saturday at 400 bar in Bukoto, a Kampala suburb.

    It’s all started when Namara and Mugisha, who we’re drinking heavily, got into a heated argument on who would take home a girl identified as Prossy Uwase.

    The argument triggered a fight that saw Capt Namara draw a weapon that nearly ended Mugisha’s life.

    Mugisha, who also is the proprietor of White house bar located in Bukoto, was shot in the neck before being rushed to Victoria Hospital in the same area where he is still receiving treatment.

    After the shooting, Capt. Namara disappeared and remains on the run.

    Kampala Metropolitan Police deputy spokesperson Luke Owoyesigire told ChimpReports this morning that although the suspect was still at large, efforts to track him down were ongoing.

    “He has not yet recorded a statement at police but we are sure he will have to do it today,” said Owoyesigire.

    “We shall give you updates later.”

    Cases of armed security personnel being involved in shooting incidents have been on the rise in recent months.

    Police also reported increased misuse of guns in its annual report of 2019.

    A total of 192 people were shot dead, of whom 171 were male adults, 1 male juvenile and 20 were female adults.

    In the same year, 137 guns and 1,048 ammunitions were recovered during the various operations against criminals throughout the country.

    By the end of 2019, 43 cases of shooting were taken to court, 1 case secured conviction while 42 cases were still pending in court.

    A total of 108 cases were still under investigations.

    Meanwhile, it has been established that all eye witnesses who were at the scene including bartenders and security guards have recorded their statements at Kira Road police station.

    While President Museveni directed that all bars remains closed to prevent the spread of Coronavirus, most of them continue to operate quietly in Kampala and other parts of the country.
