Entebbe Municipality authorities have ordered the closure of all beaches and weekly open markets as one of the measures to prevent the spread of deadly coronavirus.

Entebbe is home to many beaches that attract many revelers, especially on weekend and public holidays.

But the mayor for Entebbe Municipality, Mr Vincent Depaul Kayanja, at the weekend said the proximity of Entebbe to the airport means the area is more prone to coronavirus.

“I urge our people in Entebbe to remain vigilant as we wait for the 32 days announced by the President to elapse and review the progress,” Mr Kayanja said.

He also announced that weekly markets such as Kitoro, Nakiwogo and Central markets will also close in this period.

This comes after Uganda confirmed its first case of coronavirus on Sunday morning. The victim is a 36-year-old male resident of Kibuli, Kakungulu zone in Kampala, who had travelled to Dubai on March 17, for a business trip. He reportedly returned to Uganda on March 21 at around 2.00 am aboard Ethiopian airlines.

Last Wednesday, President Museveni ordered the closure of education institutions and stopped public gatherings and religious prayers for 32 days as one of the strategies to prevent the deadly Covid-19. Mr Museveni said it was wise to take precautionary measures than to wait for the disease to strike.
