Makerere University has finally bowed to pressure from the students and revised the tuition policy, the Nile Post has learnt.
The Ivory Tower last week experienced a nasty four-day protest against the 15 percent cumulative tuition policy approved by the university council last year as students protested against the move.
However, following an emergency meeting held on Monday afternoon, the university leadership has agreed to the increment on functional fees but retained it on tuition fees.
“The fees structure is revised and the 15% adjustment in fees shall not apply to functional fees for the remaining period of implementation of the fees structure adopted in July 2018. Functional fees shall be capped at the rate applied on the admission cohort for 2019/2020academic year for the next three years,” reads in part a resolution of the University Council following a Tuesday meeting.
They however resolved that the 15% increment on tuition fees remains untouched for the remaining period of three years.
The student leaders earlier complained that Gordon Murangira, a Personal Assistant to the Vice Chancellor and Prof. Erisa Hisali from the College of Business and Management Sciences had ordered the police and military to brutalise the protesting students but in response, the university council ordered for investigations into the allegations.
“The allegations of threatening and battering students are taken seriously and need to be investigated.”
The development comes barely a day after President Museveni called the University guild president , before ordering the military to vacate the Ivory Tower to leave Police in charge of ensuring law and order.
