The Mayor for Kasangati-Nangabo Town Council in Wakiso District, Mr Tony Sempebwa, has been arrested during the Hoima Municipality Woman parliamentary campaigns.
Mr Sempebwa, who is a member of People Power movement, was arrested on Monday while campaigning for opposition candidate Asinasi Nyakato.
According to Bunyoro Regional Police spokesman Julius Allan Hakiza, Mr Sempebwa was arrested for using a government vehicle during campaigns, which he said is against the electoral guidelines.
Mr Hakiza said the mayor is currently detained at Hoima Police awaiting arraignment before court.
“He has been arrested while campaigning using a government vehicle registration number LG 0039109,” Hakiza said. “We have preferred charges of abuse of office against him,” he added.

Mr Sempebwa, a DP diehard, is one of the many People Power adherents who are positioning themselves to replace Bobi Wine Kyagulanyi Sentamu who has already declared he won’t be seeking reelection as he has his eyes on the Presidency in 2021.
People Power and other opposition parties have thrown their weight behind the FDC candidate, Ms. Asinasi Kamanda Nyakato who will face off with NRM’s Harriet Businge Mugenyi in a hotly contested election due to take place on September 26.
The Hoima woman MP seat fell vacant after Ms. Tophace Kaahwa Byagira (NRM) chose to represent the people of the newly created Kikuube district that was carved out of Hoima in July 2018.
