The Entebbe Super Cup that started out as an exciting and peaceful tournament a month ago didn’t have a perfect ending after supporters of Kiwafu Central assaulted Referee Godfrey Male who was officiating the final match between Katabi-Kitubulu and Kiwafu Central at the Kiwafu Football pitch on Sunday. The rowdy supporters pounced on the referee and beat him up after he allegedly denied Kiwafu Central a penalty in the last dying minutes of the match.
The match that was 1-0 in favour of Katabi-Kitubulu was called off and indefinitely suspended by the tournament sponsor and Entebbe Municipality Member of Parliament Hon. Rose Tumusiime until a solution is found.
The Chairman organizing committee George Ntonganyi spoke to entebbenews about the ugly incident.
We as the Entebbe Super Cup organizing committee regret the violence that erupted during the final match between Katabi-Kitubulu and Kiwafu Central. The violence was caused by Kiwafu Central fans who claimed that the referee denied them a penalty. We are going to sit down with the team managers and LCI Chairpersons of the two respective teams and we scrutinize the referee’s report basing on the Fufa Rules and Regulations. I’m confident in one and half week’s time we shall have sorted out the matter, Ntonganyi revealed.
Katabi-Busambanga was crowned Netball Champions after they routed Kiwafu Central 28-10 in the finals. They walked away with a trophy, a bull and a set of jerseys while Kiwafu Central only walked away with a set of Jerseys and a goat. Hon. Tumusiime thanked the organizing committee and the referees and awarded them with certificates of appreciation.
