

Hundreds of mourners converged at St. John’s Church on Friday to bid farewell to the Uganda Virus Research Institute (UVRI) Clinic Head Late Dr. George Miiro Mukalazi who succumbed to Pancreatic Cancer in Mulago Hospital on Wednesday. In her Eulogy, Dr. Jessica Nakiyingi Miiro described her departed husband as a man who was passionate about his work and always played his role as a father and a husband.
“We met 16 years ago at the Uganda Virus Research Institute (UVRI) were we both working and got married in 2003. He was my best friend, we did everything together. Dr. Miiro was a caring and loving man. He was a real father. He was passionate about his work and loved research. He was a public health advocate who always did a lot of community work.

Reverend Emmanuel Ssewanyana who led the service described Late Dr. Miiro as a man who used his profession to benefit others and did a lot of public health sensitization work in several schools in Entebbe.
“Dr. Miiro was groomed in the Church and always came for church service every Sunday. We thank God for George’s life and his contribution to the Nation. He accepted the gift of salvation. He gave testimony in Church about his health condition and advised the congregation to always go for Medical Checkups”, Reverend Ssewanyana said. A couple of weeks ago Dr. Miiro was flown to Tel Aviv Israel for the further treatment.


Dr. Miiro will be laid to rest today in Banda, a city suburb at 4pm. He is survived by a widow Dr. Jessica Nakiyingi Miiro and three kids. At the time of his death, Dr. George Miiro was the Uganda Virus Research Institute Clinic Head and Medical Research officer in charge of European Diseases Clinical Trials Program (EDCTP). At the time of his death he was 43 years old.
