Fresh from being crowned as Uganda Sports Press Association (USPA) player of the month of February, Uganda Wood ball Top seed Lillian Zawedde emerged overall lady winner at the 4th Uganda International Woodball Open Championship that teed off at the lake Side breath taking, serene Kisubi beach. Playing 36 fairways in a two day tournament, Zawedde returned a total of 169 strokes to emerge winner in the ladies category. She returned a total of 110 strokes on day one (Friday) playing 58 and 52 in round one and two respectively while on day two Saturday (Round 3) she returned a total of 59 strokes. Ndejje University’s Joan Mukoova (Team A) took second place with a total of 184 strokes while Daniela Nabukalu (Ndejje University Wood ball Club) finished in third place with 185 strokes.
Zawedde (110) who plays for Ndejje University Wood ball Club also two other silver medals. She guided her club that comprises of Nabukalu Daniela (121), Nankya Connie (140) and Matovu Rose (145) to a second place finish with 516 strokes in the Women’s competitions. Ndejje University (Team A) that comprises of Mukoova Joan (125), Nakato Cissy (126), Operu Viola (126), Nalubega Joyce (127) took Gold after they emerged overall winners. Zawedde and Rose Nabaggala pair bagged silver medals after they emerged second in the Women’s doubles competition with a total of 68 strokes. Jerotich Sharon and Muganyizi Comfort pair emerged overall winners with 66 strokes.
I’m delighted with the victory. I would like to thank my team mates for their spectacular performance. I’m now focused on the upcoming championships in China and South Korea, a delighted Zawedde told entebbenews.
In the Men’s singles category Isaac Ariho emerged overall winner with 159 strokes. Collins Kamoga (Ndejje University Team A) and Paul Egadu (Ndejje University Team B) finished in second and third place with 159 and 163 strokes respectively.
Other Winners:
In the Men’s Doubles category, Rwandese Bruno Bossa and Musisi El-Mohammed pair (Ndejje Woodball Club) returned a total of 50 strokes to emerge winners. Ndejje University foursome team A Kamoga Collins (101), Adupa Joel (105), Kasooba Ephraim (114) and Kawumba Ronald (114) returned a total of 434 strokes to excel in the Men’s event.
Bank of Uganda’s William Osire and Jessica Nabbona emerged winners in the men’s and women’s corporate event. Osire returned a total of 65 strokes to finish winner in the men’s category while Nabbona Jessica (Stroke Woodball Club) finished top in the women’s category with 67 strokes.
Peter Omara the commissioner sports in the Ministry of Education commended the Woodball federation for their efforts to spread the game of woodball across Africa.
I want to see the game of woodball spreading to various African Countries nd we as Government we shall continue to support woodball federation because of their able, progressive, Consistent and Harmonious leadership. We shall also partner with the Woodball fraternity to ensure that the sport is promoted in Schools in addition to sponsoring two players who will be travelling for world Cup Championship, Omara stated.
