The Uganda Civil Aviation Authority (UCAA) has called for greater female participation in aviation, as the country joined the world to celebrate Girls in Aviation Day 2025. The event, held at UCAA headquarters in Entebbe, brought together students, aviation professionals, and key industry stakeholders to inspire more girls to join the field.

Empowering the Next Generation of Women in Aviation

UCAA’s Acting Director General, Olive B. Lumonya, said the initiative is part of the International Civil Aviation Organization’s Next Generation of Aviation Professionals (NGAP) programme, which champions gender equality and youth empowerment in the aviation sector.

She explained that the event is designed to help girls interact with aviation role models, learn about diverse career options, and understand how they can play an important role in the future of air transport.

“Aviation is not only about pilots. There are careers in airport management, engineering, air traffic control, firefighting, finance, and even new areas such as drone operations,” Lumonya noted.

Currently, women make up 32 percent of UCAA’s workforce, but the authority says it is committed to raising that figure by supporting mentorship, training, and scholarships tailored to women.

Girls Encouraged to Focus on STEM

Lumonya advised participants to prioritize STEM education—science, technology, engineering, and mathematics—as the foundation for building successful aviation careers. She added that resilience and determination are key for young women seeking to excel in traditionally male-dominated fields.

Industry Partners Push for More Inclusion

The event was organized in partnership with AirServ and African Leaders in Aviation, both of which have been instrumental in encouraging more young women to embrace the aviation profession.

Robinah Nalumu of AirServ praised the strong turnout, noting that schools across Uganda participated. She expressed optimism that the programme will grow into a national movement, inspiring even more girls to take interest in aviation.

Building a More Inclusive Aviation Industry in Uganda

By celebrating Girls in Aviation Day, UCAA hopes to build momentum for a more inclusive aviation industry in Uganda and across Africa. The Authority pledged to continue creating opportunities that will enable young women to thrive as pilots, engineers, and leaders in aviation.
