President Yoweri Museveni has appointed High Court Judge Aisha Batala as Uganda’s new Inspector General of Government (IGG), replacing Beti Kamya, whose term has come to an end.
Justice Batala’s appointment marks a significant shift in the country’s anti-corruption leadership, as she is expected to bring judicial expertise and independence to the office. Her appointment was announced in an official communication from the State House, pending parliamentary approval.
The outgoing IGG, Beti Kamya, who was appointed in 2021, has been recognized for her efforts in raising public awareness about corruption, though her tenure faced criticism for limited convictions in high-profile cases.
Justice Batala, currently serving at the High Court, is widely respected in legal circles for her integrity and experience in handling complex cases. Her appointment comes at a time when Uganda continues to face challenges in fighting corruption across public institutions.
Once approved by Parliament, she will lead the Inspectorate in investigating, prosecuting, and preventing corruption and abuse of office, a mandate considered critical to good governance and public accountability in Uganda.
