Kampala, Uganda | ENTEBBENEWS.NET | Vivo Energy Uganda has launched a mobile training programme aimed at taking skills development closer to employees working at Shell service stations and mechanics across the country.
The initiative, dubbed “Learning on Wheels,” consists of two mobile training units a Retail Academy and a Shell Lubricants Mobile Training Unit which will travel to Shell service stations and other locations to provide practical training to frontline workers.
The programme is expected to reach more than 200 Shell service stations and train over 2,000 forecourt employees, while also providing technical training to hundreds of independent mechanics through the Shell Workshop Action Team (SWAT) initiative.
The training will cover customer service, health, safety, security, environment and quality standards, digital skills and leadership, as well as practical diagnosis of lubricant-related problems.
Vivo Energy Uganda, which distributes and markets Shell-branded fuels and lubricants in the country, said the mobile approach is intended to address one of the challenges associated with conventional workplace training taking employees away from their stations and daily duties.
Instead, the mobile classrooms will take the training to employees at their places of work.
Hans Paulsen, Executive Vice President (East) of Vivo Energy Group, said the programme was designed to link workforce development with the company’s operational standards.
“Infrastructure, high-quality fuels, and premium lubricants build our presence across East Africa, but our people build our brand,” Paulsen said.
“What the Uganda team has achieved sets a new industry benchmark for how commercial efficiency and human empowerment can go hand in hand to deliver uniform excellence without interrupting daily business.”
The programme builds on Vivo Energy Uganda’s existing investment in employee training.
In 2020, the company established its first Retail Academy at Shell Capital on Kampala Road before later moving it to Shell Kitende. The facility includes classrooms, e-learning tools and a live forecourt training environment.
Shell Kitende will remain the company’s central training facility, while the mobile units are expected to extend training to employees who may not be able to regularly travel to the centre.
Joanita Mukasa Menya, Managing Director of Vivo Energy Uganda, said improving access to training was part of the company’s approach to developing its frontline workforce.
“At Vivo Energy Uganda, our people drive the exceptional experiences we deliver every day. Innovation is about finding better ways to empower people,” she said.
“‘Learning on Wheels’ reflects our commitment to making high-quality training accessible to everyone, ensuring that every retail team member and mechanic can learn, grow, and succeed wherever they operate.”
The initiative also targets independent mechanics through practical training in lubricant selection and diagnostics.
At the launch at Shell Lugogo service station in Kampala, participants were taken through demonstrations of the two mobile units, including customer- care simulations and lubricant diagnostics using specialised equipment.
The programme comes as service stations increasingly rely on frontline workers to provide both customer-facing services and technical information on vehicle products.
For Vivo Energy, the mobile training model provides a way of standardising training across its network while allowing employees to remain at their stations during normal operations.
The company said the fleet will now begin a nationwide tour of Shell stations.
The rollout is expected to test whether taking training directly to workplaces can expand access to skills development while maintaining consistency in customer service, safety standards and technical knowledge across the network
