Kampala, Uganda | NEWS CORRESPONDENT | KURA Asset Management has entered Uganda’s investment management market, targeting a growing pool of individuals, families and institutions looking beyond traditional savings towards professionally managed investments and long-term wealth creation.

The entry comes amid significant growth in Uganda’s investment industry. According to the Capital Markets Authority, assets held in Collective Investment Schemes grew from approximately UGX 731 billion in June 2021 to UGX 6.02 trillion by March 2026, while funded investor accounts increased from approximately 29,000 to more than 220,000. More recent Ministry of Finance data puts Collective Investment Scheme assets at approximately UGX 7.08 trillion by August 2026.

KURA enters the market with the KURA Income Fund, KURA Dollar Fund, Private Wealth Management and Family Wealth Planning, providing options ranging from accessible pooled investment funds to tailored portfolio and generational wealth solutions.

The Income Fund targets investors seeking income and capital preservation, while the Dollar Fund provides access to United States dollar-denominated investments. KURA’s Private Wealth Management proposition builds investment strategies around individual goals, liquidity needs and risk profiles, while Family Wealth Planning extends this to areas including asset protection, estate and multi-generational transfer, family governance and succession planning.

KURA Board Chairman Peter Kabatsi said the firm wants to address a challenge that comes with the increasing range of investment opportunities available to Ugandans.

“Access to investment products does not necessarily mean an investor knows what is appropriate for their circumstances. KURA starts with the client: their goals, risk appetite and long-term objectives and builds an investment approach around those needs. For families, that conversation also extends to how wealth is protected, stewarded and transferred to the next generation.”

The growth in professionally managed assets points to changing investor behaviour, but also considerable room for further participation. The Capital Markets Authority has set an ambition to grow funded Collective Investment Scheme accounts to one million.

KURA Chief Executive Officer Ronald Kasolo said this presents an opportunity for the industry to move beyond simply increasing access to investment products.

“The first stage of this growth has been about getting more Ugandans to invest. The next will increasingly be about how they invest. As people accumulate wealth, the conversation moves beyond returns to liquidity, diversification, currency exposure and how different investments work together. We see an opportunity to support that transition from saving, to investing, to more deliberate management of wealth.”

Kasolo brings more than 20 years of experience spanning asset management, capital markets regulation and pensions, including experience managing investment portfolios exceeding UGX 2 trillion. He previously served as General Manager of Britam Asset Managers Uganda and Country Manager at GenAfrica Asset Managers Uganda, with earlier experience at the Capital Markets Authority and National Social Security Fund.

The KURA launch was officiated by the State Minister of Finance, Planning and Economic Development, Hon Amos Lugoloobi with Kenyan entrepreneur and business leader Kiprono Kittony delivering the keynote address.

Kittony is Chairman of Kenya Airways and former Chairman of the Nairobi Securities Exchange and Kenya National Chamber of Commerce and Industry. He is also a co-founder of Radio Africa Group and has held leadership roles across several businesses and industry bodies.

In his keynote address, Kittony reflected on how technology is reshaping financial markets, pointing to developments including artificial intelligence, virtual assets, cryptocurrency and tokenised securities. He called for regulatory frameworks that allow innovation to flourish while mitigating emerging risks and strengthening consumer protection.

He also made the case for deeper and better-connected African capital markets, including greater integration between markets such as Uganda and Kenya, and highlighted the role asset managers can play in mobilising African savings and connecting them to African investment opportunities.

The event included a fireside panel discussion on growing riches into wealth and succession planning for future generations, featuring entrepreneur Robert Kabonero, lawyer and businessman William Byaruhanga, and Kittony.

The discussion explored how accumulated assets can be transformed into sustainable wealth through professional investment management, appropriate governance and succession planning; reflecting a broader challenge as Uganda’s investment market evolves from simply accumulating savings towards investing, preserving and transferring wealth across generations.

KURA Asset Management is licensed and regulated by Uganda’s Capital Markets Authority.
