Kalungu, Uganda | URN | Residents and the housemaid of Kalungu Bunga in Makindye say the stabbing of five children, of of them fatally, was triggered by a husband’s marrying another wife.

Dorothy Namayo, 43, a Kenyan national, allegedly killed two of her children and left three others critically injured in Kalungu Bunga, Ggaba, Makindye Division on this morning.

Police have identified the deceased as Khadija Daizy, 14, who died instantly in her bedroom, and Hawa Dalena, 7, who later succumbed to injuries at Nsambya Hospital where she was rushed by responders. Three other children aged 13, 8 and 5 survived with injuries and are receiving treatment in hospital.

Mariam Saana, the housemaid, told police she woke up around 5:00 a.m. after hearing noise from the main house opposite her boys’ quarter. Opening the door, she saw a car on fire outside and one child at the window calling out that their mother had stabbed all of them and had gone outside.

Saana said she tried to open the main house but the lock had been changed, and the gate was also locked with a new padlock. She raised an alarm that attracted neighbors, who broke down the gate and cut open the main door which had been locked from the inside.

“When we got inside, we found the children’s rooms were also locked and had to force them open. We rushed the children in a police patrol vehicle to a clinic in Ggaba, and they were later referred to Nsambya Hospital,” said a responder. “The mother had also locked herself inside. When we opened the room, she was found in a pool of blood and was taken by police to Nsambya Hospital as well.”

Godfrey Mukisa, one of the neighbors who responded, said they struggled to gain access. “When we entered, we found one child had been cut in the neck and was dead,” he said. “Another child had been badly stabbed in the stomach, while the others also had stomach injuries.”

He added: “At first we heard the noise, but we didn’t want to interfere in the affairs of rich people. Then the girl kept calling and shouting at the top of her voice for help. Other people came out of their houses and we managed to gain access. Police had also arrived, and we helped take the victims to Ggaba Hospital.”

Saana said that before the incident, Ederisa Troy a Malian national, the husband of the suspect, came home distressed and got into a fight with his wife. According to her, the wife accused him of cheating and told him to go back to his other wife.

She said the children called one of their father’s friends, who came and intervened. The husband then left after the situation had calmed down.

“The trouble started in May this year after the husband allegedly took a second wife,” Saana. “He reportedly wanted sons, because his wife has only daughters. Since then, they have been fighting and quarreling every time he comes home. There has been no peace here.”

Emmanuel Kazibwe, another close neighbor to the family, also told URN that the couple had been fighting at night but would later reconcile. “We never imagined it would get to this point, with the woman killing her own children and then trying to take her own life,” Kazibwe said.

Gift Atuheire, the Deputy City Resident Commissioner of Makindye Division, who visited the scene of the crime, has condemned the rising anger among couples over endless marital issues.

“This is very unfortunate,” Atuheire said. “We have lost two innocent lives. It’s been confirmed that the first and the last born have died, as the other three are fighting for their lives. But these children had nothing to do with the issues with her husband. What she has done is very terrible. Even if you have issues with your husband, you can separate or divorce, but do not take the lives of innocent people.”

By press time, detectives from Kabalagala Police Station were still combing the scene of the crime. Kalungu zone is a few kilometers from Ggaba Landing Site, where a notorious attacker, Christopher Onyum, stabbed four toddlers to death at Ggaba Early Childhood Development Centre in April this year. Onyum was later convicted of murder and sentenced to death.”
