A coordinated operation between the National Medical Stores (NMS) security team, the Special Forces Command (SFC), and the Uganda Police Force has successfully thwarted an attempted robbery at an NMS-rented warehouse in Entebbe.
The incident, which occurred on Tuesday night, ended with the recovery of all medical supplies and the arrest of several suspects.
Swift Response Prevents Loss of Essential Medicines
In a statement released by Sheilla Nduhukire, the Principal Public Relations Officer for NMS, it was confirmed that the security breach was detected early, allowing for a swift tactical intervention.
“The incident was detected and stopped by NMS security teams working jointly with the Special Forces Command and the Uganda Police Force,” Nduhukire stated.
Despite the boldness of the attempted theft, NMS assured the public that the national medicine supply chain remains intact. The suspects were intercepted while still on the warehouse premises, ensuring that no medical items were removed from the site.
Casualties and Arrests
The joint security operation resulted in the following:
-
Two suspects injured: Currently receiving medical treatment under tight security.
-
Three suspects arrested: Currently in police custody assisting with ongoing investigations.
-
Scene Cordoned: The warehouse area was immediately secured to allow forensic experts and investigators to gather evidence.
Commitment to Safeguarding National Assets
This incident highlights the heightened security around critical infrastructure in Uganda, particularly facilities housing essential healthcare supplies. NMS emphasized that its operations have not been disrupted by the event.
“NMS continues to cooperate fully with the relevant authorities and remains committed to safeguarding our personnel, assets, and the integrity of the national medicines supply chain,” Nduhukire added, while commending the security agencies for their rapid and professional response.
What This Means for Uganda’s Health Sector
The National Medical Stores plays a pivotal role in the procurement and distribution of medicines across Uganda. The failure of this robbery attempt is a significant win for the Ministry of Health and the security apparatus, ensuring that life-saving medications reach the intended hospitals and health centers without delay.
Further updates regarding the identity of the suspects and the progress of the legal proceedings are expected to be communicated by the Uganda Police in due course.
