The Entebbe International Airport Free Zone (EIAFZ) is nearing full operational status, marking a transformative milestone in Uganda’s mission to become a premier manufacturing and export hub in Africa.

By reaching a 90% completion rate at the end of the 2024/2025 financial year, this flagship project is set to accelerate Uganda’s export-led industrialization. As the nation’s first public Free Zone, the facility is designed to streamline logistics, enhance value addition, and boost competitiveness in the global market.

    Strategic Infrastructure for Export-Led Growth

Situated on five prime acres at Entebbe International Airport, the Free Zone offers a specialized environment for high-value manufacturing and logistics. The facility is equipped with modern infrastructure to support seamless trade, including:

    • Seven production units designed for industrial manufacturing.

    • An integrated trade house to centralize administrative and commercial services.

    • Comprehensive external infrastructure, including access roads, a weighbridge, and dedicated utility connections.

This strategic location ensures that Ugandan products have direct, efficient access to international air cargo routes, significantly reducing lead times for perishable and high-value exports.

Attracting Investment in Coffee, Horticulture, and Beyond

The Uganda Free Zones and Export Promotions Authority (UFZEPA) reports significant interest from domestic and international investors.

Hez Kimoomi Alinda, Executive Director of UFZEPA, highlighted the momentum:

“We are already seeing strong interest from companies in key export sectors such as coffee processing, horticulture, and other value-addition industries. Many are actively prospecting the space with plans to install machinery and commence operations immediately.”

UFZEPA is actively inviting export-oriented investors and developers to apply for space within the facility or explore similar strategic opportunities in other regions of the country.

Overcoming Challenges to Unlock Economic Potential

While the project has seen substantial progress, the path to 100% completion has faced hurdles, primarily due to budget constraints that delayed civil works. However, the government is now prioritizing the finalization of essential utilities, including:

    • Power and Water Upgrades: Ensuring high-capacity supply for industrial needs.

    • ICT Infrastructure: Providing high-speed connectivity for modern trade operations.

    • Road Networks: Optimizing internal and external logistics flow.

Why the Entebbe Free Zone Matters for Uganda’s Economy

The operationalization of the EIAFZ is a pillar of Uganda’s broader strategy to leverage Special Economic Zones (SEZs). By providing structured infrastructure, the government aims to:

    1. Increase Foreign Exchange Earnings: By shifting from raw material exports to value-added products.

    2. Job Creation: Stimulating employment in the manufacturing and logistics sectors.

    3. Global Integration: Strengthening Uganda’s position within regional (EAC, AfCFTA) and global supply chains.

As the final civil works wrap up, the Entebbe International Airport Free Zone stands ready to serve as the engine of Uganda’s modern export economy.
