Musician Freeboy Adamz has confessed that the death of his manager, Treggy Eyotre Godwin, was a big blow to him and his career.
Freeboy got his big breakthrough in 2020 with ‘Kwata Essimu’, a collaboration with Winnie Nwagi that topped charts. Just as he was starting to pick up momentum in the industry with ‘Touch Me Slow’, his manager was diagnosed with leukemia as they were planning on actively marketing the song.
He later died in lockdown, and it affected me greatly. It pushed my career back a lot. Most times, people call me a one-hit wonder, not knowing what happened behind the curtains that led to that.
Freeboy Adamz says he is currently based in Arua, where he handles his personal business and gets booked to perform at shows in the West Nile and Congo. He revealed he is still doing music, but at his own pace because he is not under any pressure.
The industry is calculative; I don’t want to do music because of pressure. The time I have spent in the industry, I’m not pressured to do anything. Twenty years down the road, when I release my hit song, it means there will come a time when you will hear something new from me at the right time.
Amidst all the challenges, however, Freeboy credits himself for keeping sane and not succumbing to industry pressure that has driven most artists to do drugs.
It hasn’t been easy; most have gone to rehab and gone mad because of stress. But I still look good, do my shows in different places, and handle my personal business. I have many songs.
