Media personality MC Kats, real name Edwin Katamba, has opened up on his personal story living with HIV as the world commemorated World AIDS Day yesterday.
Appearing in a TV interview, Kats revealed that when he realized he was infected, he first lived in denial, ignoring his medication. But over time, he accepted it and began looking for a way to get his life back on track.
Initially, there were rumours about Kats’ status until he personally disclosed it to the public, a decision he says drove him into depression. One of the worst things he says is the public pointing fingers at his children and the women he has dated.
I was hoping to help people out there by showing them that life can go on and that they could still achieve their dreams. But the most challenging part of coming out is my children and their mothers facing criticism. We are in an era where people need to know that discordant couples exist.
Despite the stigmatization, Kats says he will not give up, as many people look up to him. He encouraged the government to invest in sensitizing the masses about the virus and how to protect themselves against it.

I still face a lot of stigmatization from people around me, and it is tough. That is what kills most people; they end up depressed, like the way I was. I had given up on myself. So, I urge people to let them be. They still have life, dreams to fulfill. AIDS is still very present; Please use protection and test always. It is not fun to take medication every day. It kills you psychologically.
