A family dispute in Mukono has led to the arrest of a woman for allegedly attempting to steal her own daughter’s one-month-old baby.

Bridget Nalweyiso, 22, reported to Wantoni Police Station after a heated confrontation with her mother, Barbra Babirye, 45, who she accused of refusing to return the child.

Nalweyiso said her mother Babirye was claiming the baby as her own.

The incident unfolded after Babirye escorted Nalweyiso to Mukono General Hospital for the birth and later persuaded her daughter to temporarily leave the baby in her care.

However, Babirye reportedly began telling others that the child was hers, even attempting to present the baby to her new husband as her own.

“I was shocked when I heard she was telling people the baby was hers,” Nalweyiso said, breaking down in an emotional interview.

“She even asked for money from her husband under the false claim that the baby was hers.”

Witnesses, including residents who had seen Nalweyiso pregnant, were outraged by Babirye’s actions.

“We knew it was Nalweyiso’s baby. She had been visibly pregnant,” said Kimbowa Sonko, the chairperson of Basiima Kikooza cell.

“When Barbra claimed the baby as hers, we couldn’t believe it.”

Following Nalweyiso’s report, Babirye was arrested by Mukono Division Police on charges of attempting to steal the child.

The case has sent shockwaves through the community, sparking debates about family loyalty and the lengths some individuals will go to manipulate others for personal gain.

The investigation is ongoing as the legal process unfolds.
