Kampala Metropolitan Police is holding nine suspects involved in conning unsuspecting members of the public by staging fake promotions and prize winning schemes.
The suspects were arrested by Katwe Police which carried out an intelligence-led operation on Wednesday in areas of Masajja, Makindye-Sabagabo in Wakiso District where they have been operating.
‘Call Call’ conmen, as they are commonly known, defraud people using mobile phones, calling them and claiming they (call receivers) have won prizes or by sending fake mobile money messages, telling the unsuspecting victims to send money.
According to Kampala Metropolitan Police, the same group has been breaking into people’s houses and stealing household property.
During the operation, KMP deputy spokesperson Luke Owoyesigire said, the suspects were arrested with suspected stolen items found at their residences.
The items include three television sets, music systems, machetes and government stores.
“They also had marijuana in their possession,” Owoyesigire said.
He further revealed that this group, commanded by a one Michael Kinalwa who was also arrested, had for long turned Kosovo a no-go zone, by attacking whoever is not known in the area.
“They have on several occasions stoned and ganged up against police officers during arrests in their area,” Owoyeigire revealed.
On Sunday, March 7, 2021, at around 2 pm, this criminal gang reportedly attacked a one Nagasha while she drove in the area and robbed her bag containing about USD 30,000 and Shs 300,000.
A one Musudan stopped the vehicle, banged the door and when the frightened lady opened, they grabbed the bag and took off, according to police.
Upon interrogation, Musudan alleged that he took the bag and its contents to their gang leader Micheal Kinalwa, who later gave him a day’s allowance.
Nine people, including their commander, have been arrested and the operation is still ongoing to capture more of these criminals.
Last week, Police said that they activated sting operations to crackdown on criminals especially in Kampala and the neighbouring areas.
Apparently, over 50 criminals, including those that disguise as boda boda riders and rob people, have been arrested by the elite Flying Squad Unit.
