The Permanent Secretary Ministry of Health Dr. Diana Atwiine, has said Education Institutions should be prepared for a longer wait, even after the Covid19 lockdown is eased.
President Yoweri Museveni is expected to address the nation tonight on whether or not he will be lifting the lockdown.
But according to Dr Atwiine, schools are unlikely to be part of the sectors to be reopened first.
Speaking to the Kisoro District Covid-19 task-force members at Uganda-DR Congo border of Bunagana on Saturday, Dr. Atwine said that re-opening of schools is currently not planned.
Dr. Atwiine who also assessed the Covid-19 preparedness at Uganda-Rwanda border of Chanika, Kisoro hospital in Kisoro district, Uganda-Rwanda border of Katuna and Kabale Regional Referral Hospital in Kabale district, explained that the government is aware that some schools especially those along the border attract learners from neighbouring countries.
She said opening such schools now means giving a chance for some foreigner to cross to Uganda.
Atwiine said reopening of schools requires a comprehensive plan to guarantee safety of learners and total preparedness against COVID-19.
She also hinted that the lockdown will be lifted partially in order not to take on too much risk.
