Twenty one year old Sam Kakaire sailed to victory at the support Entebbe Athletics Club Inaugural race Championship held on Sunday February 22, at the Works Grounds in Entebbe. Kakaire clinched the 100m and 200m slots with 11:12 and 23.09 running time respectively. Caesar Bashir came trailing in the second position with 11:50 and 24:00 running time in the 100m and 200m categories respectively while Opio Joel came third in the 200m category.
“I started Entebbe Athletics Club with Veteran marathon runner Asonya Moses now head coach back in August 2012 and we began with 40 runners but the club hasn’t been active since then and some runners have since dropped out” Kakaire said.
“We decided to call the race support Entebbe Athletics Club championship race so as to rejuvenate the club after a three year absence” he added.
“It hasn’t been easy organizing this inaugural race. I have been looking for sponsors, moved to several radio stations to promote the idea and we have so far got one sponsor Tonny Ssozi Director Mansavu Group of Companies who has boosted the race with Shs.500, 000” he continued.
Kakaire thanked Ssozi Tony for his big and philanthropic heart as he received the cash. “Mr. Ssozi I would like to sincerely thank you for supporting Entebbe Athletics Club and I promise you the club will recruit and train more talent” he stressed.
Kakaire was also grateful to Entebbe Municipality Mayor Kayanja Vincent DePaul who also boosted the race with Shs. 70,000.
“I am now focusing my attention on the upcoming Africa Junior Championships in Athletics due to take place in Addis Ababa Ethiopia on
4th-8th March 2015 and I’m requesting” Kakaire stressed.
Ndejje University’s Bahati Sadik clinched the 10km marathon category with a running time of 27:05:37 while Kateregga John also from Ndejje University and Air force’s Sikoria Martin came trailing in the second and third position with 27:36:37 and 28:00:90 running times respectively.
In the Girls 5km category Namatte Primary School’s Birungi Zainab finished first with a running time of 6:96:90, she also won the 15kms girl’s race. Bugonga Primary School’s Aneno Monica and Entebbe Parents Secondary school’s Ndera Vancian came second and third respectively.
Baron Twesigye won the 15kms men’s race with a running time of 4:38:99 while Morris Asiime finished second.
Team Mongers easily won the short relay category with Opio Joel at the finishing line. Entebbe Athletics Club and Entebbe Parents Secondary School came second and third respectively. Close to 50 participants graced the Inaugural race Championship and Sponsor Ssozi Tony vowed to continue supporting Entebbe Athletics Club and Kakaire Sam who is looking forward to participating in several upcoming Athletics championships.
